The Office’s Rainn Wilson has changed his name to Rainnfall Heat Wave Extreme Winter Wilson. While uncertain if the change is yet legal or official, the actor’s decision is not as radical as it might seem. 

Having high-profile celebrities actively partake in discussions of climate change has always been the best way to garner public attention. Some popular names bringing attention to the fight against climate change include Leonardo DiCaprio, Pharrell Williams, Shailene Woodley, and Jane Fonda, to name a few. Others, like Greta Thunberg, are now known due to their climate activism.

For Rainn Wilson, how now is now his biggest call to action. Unlike others, Wilson’s name change doesn’t align himself with climate activism. His name directly calls out the perils we face against a currently losing battle. Rainnfall Heat Wave Extreme Winter Wilson shared, “this is not a joke, I’m as serious as the melting Arctic, which amplifies global risks including extreme weather events around the globe.”

A Call To Action

With his name change, Wilson directly calls for the leaders present at the Climate Change Conference (COP27) to take notice and action of the Arctic “melting at millions of liters per second.” Wilson adds that since the problem has not yet made a name for itself, we must do so instead. And so he did.

While the name change might seem unnecessary, it has certainly done exactly what Wilson hoped for. Online publications and social media quickly spread the news. When reporting the name change, outlets have no choice but to report on the issue Wilson wishes to bring attention to as well.
